Many students finish Class 10 or 12 and wonder what comes next. Commerce offers a few good professional courses, and CMA (Cost and Management Accountancy) is one of them. It is run by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI), and the Foundation exam is where it starts. This post covers the basics in plain language.
Who Can Apply?
The rules have two stages.
Registration: You can register for CMA Foundation once you have passed Class 10 (or an equivalent exam) from a recognised board. You don't have to wait for Class 12.
Appearing for the exam: You can sit the Foundation exam after passing Class 12 or while you are appearing in Class 12.
Students who are already graduates can skip Foundation and go straight to the Intermediate level, but that is a separate topic. Rules can change, so check icmai.in before you fill out any form.
When Is the Exam?
ICMAI holds the Foundation exam twice a year, in June and December. The June 2026 exam was held on 14 June. For December 2026, the exam was held on 14 December, and the registration window for this term closed on 31 July 2026. If you missed it, the next opportunity is the June 2027 term. Registration for June usually closes around the end of January, so don't leave it to the last week.
Subjects in CMA Foundation
There are four papers, and each combines two areas.
Paper 1: Fundamentals of Business Laws and Business Communication.
Contract basics, sale of goods, company law, and how to write and speak clearly in a business setting.
Weightage:
Section A: Business Laws (80%)
Section B: Business Communication (20%)
Paper 2: Fundamentals of Financial and Cost Accounting.
Journal entries, ledgers, trial balances, final accounts, and the first ideas of cost sheets and cost behaviour.
Weightage:
Section A: Financial Accounting (70%)
Section B: Cost Accounting (30%)
Paper 3: Fundamentals of Business Mathematics and Statistics.
Ratios, percentages, interest, equations, mean, median, mode, correlation and probability.
Weightage:
Section A: Business Mathematics (40%)
Section B: Business Statistics (60%)
Paper 4: Fundamentals of Business Economics and Management.
Demand and supply, market structures, national income, plus management principles and organisational behaviour.
Weightage:
Section A: Business Economics (70%)
Section B: Management (30%)
Students from a commerce background usually find paper 2 easy. Students from a science or arts background often do well in Paper 3. Everyone has a paper that they like and a paper that takes more time.
Paper Pattern
The Foundation exam is objective, i.e., only multiple-choice questions (MCQ). You fill up an OMR sheet at a centre. Each paper is worth 100 marks. Each correct answer is 2 marks. You will have fifty questions per paper, and you will choose the right option rather than write long answers.
Because the questions are MCQs, speed and clarity matter as much as knowing the subject. Many students lose marks by overthinking easy questions and running out of time on the last few.
Is There Negative Marking?
No. In CMA Foundation, there is no negative marking. Wrong answer will not cut your marks. You will not lose anything if you attempt all the questions. So, never leave an OMR bubble empty. If you are unsure, eliminate the choices you know are wrong and choose the best of the rest.
Passing Criteria
To clear the foundation, you need:
- At least 40% marks in each paper, and
- At least 50% marks in aggregate across all four papers.
This means one weak paper can hold you back even if the others went well, so prepare all four subjects evenly.
Results
ICMAI publishes results on its official website, and you log in with your registration number. The June 2026 result was announced in July 2026. December results usually follow within a couple of months of the exam. After you pass, you can register for the Intermediate level and carry on with the course.
A Simple Preparation Plan
You don't need a complicated routine. Try this:
- Start with the syllabus. Know which chapters carry more weightage in each paper.
- Learn concepts first, then practise MCQs. Practice without understanding doesn't last.
- Solve past papers and ICMAI mock tests. They show you the real question style.
- Revise every week. A short weekly revision works better than a big cram before the exam.
- Take timed tests. Practise finishing a full paper within the time limit.
