Confused about what to do after 12th or graduation? CMA is an option if you like numbers, costing and business decisions. This short guide tells you what CMA is, when to apply, the three levels, the exam pattern, articleship, jobs, and why CMA is worth it.
What Is CMA?
CMA stands for Cost and Management Accountant. The course is run by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI).
A CMA enables a company to control its costs, plan its budgets, set its prices and make sound financial decisions. In simple terms it shows a business how to make more profit.
When Can You Apply for CMA?
You can start CMA at different stages:
-
After Class 12: you can appear in the Foundation exam once you have appeared in or passed Class 12 as per ICMAI’s rules. A student who has passed Class 12 (any stream, though commerce is of course the most useful) can register directly for the Foundation.
-
After graduation: Graduates in any subject (with the exception of Fine Arts) can register directly for the CMA Intermediate level without having to clear the Foundation. A number of other professional qualifications also provide for direct entry into the Intermediate level. See the ICMAI website for the full list.
Exams are held twice a year (in June and December). Register a few months in advance of the exam you intend to give and check the ICMAI website for the most up to date dates and fees.
