CSEET Eligibility and Exemptions: Who Doesn’t Need to Write It? CA Point

It is a significant decision for students who wish to study corporate law, company compliance, and corporate governance to select the Company Secretary (CS) course. Should students first become familiar with the eligibility criteria for the Company Secretary Executive Entrance Test (CSEET)?
The good news is that not all students are required to sit for CSEET; the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) grants exemptions to various candidates on the basis of their existing qualifications.
In this blog article, we outline who is eligible to apply for CSEET, which students are exempt from having to take the exam, and how you can check your eligibility prior to registering for the CS Executive Programme.

What Is CSEET?

CSEET is the acronym for Company Secretary Executive Entrance Test and is an entrance exam organised by ICSI for those students who wish to study the Company Secretary course.
For the June 2026 session, ICSI implemented a restructured CSEET together with revised eligibility rules and new examination requirements. Those students who intend to enter the CS course should refer to the most recent guidelines before they apply.
Candidates who possess certain qualifications, however, may register directly for the CS Executive Programme without having to take the CSEET.

CSEET Eligibility Criteria

The new CSEET rules allow Indian nationals who have already passed or are taking their Class 12 examination or an equivalent to apply for CSEET.
Students in their final year of school may take up the CS course if they are interested in company law, business regulations, compliance, and corporate management.
Students who already possess certain professional or academic qualifications may be granted an exemption from the CSEET.

Who Is Exempted From CSEET?

ICSI provides exemptions to eligible candidates so that they can proceed directly to the CS Executive Programme. The main categories under the restructured rules are explained below.

1. CS Foundation Passed Students

Students who have already taken the ICSI Foundation Examination are exempted from sitting for the CSEET.r
The CS Foundation programme was offered under the old admission system, and even though entry into the Foundation Programme is no longer being allowed, students who have passed the exam can still make use of their qualification in accordance with the relevant ICSI rules.

If you have already obtained your CS Foundation qualification, you should check the records of your qualification and the requirements for registration before you apply for the Executive Programme.

2. CMA Final Passed Students

Students who have reached the final stage of the CSEET course offered by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) are entitled to exemption from the CSEET in accordance with the relevant rules.
It is useful to CMA-qualified students who wish to take the CS course and gain further knowledge in the areas of corporate law, governance, and regulatory compliance.
Instead of preparing for another entrance examination, eligible CMA Final pass students can proceed towards CS Executive registration

3. Graduates and Postgraduates

The exemption clauses in accordance with the ICSI can help students who completed their degrees from recognised universities get an immediate entry to the CS Executive Programme.
Students with commerce, management, law, arts, science degrees, amongst others, need to confirm if their degrees comply with the present ICSI guidelines and criteria.
The above route is beneficial for students who wish to pursue the Company Secretary course after completing a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
Important note: The exemption rules have been changed in accordance with the new CSEET structure. So please make sure to consult the latest ICSI notifications to know what degrees are eligible for direct entry.

4. Other Eligible Candidates

The new framework also has among its categories some additional ones, for example those comprising students who have passed the CA Intermediate exam and students who are eligible to take the final year or the final semester of a three-year undergraduate programme.
Students who are taking the recognised five-year integrated programmes may also meet the requirements under certain conditions based on semesters.
Where provisional registration is allowed, it may involve having to submit the necessary documents and evidence of qualification within the specified time frame.

Quick Check: Are You Exempted From CSEET?

1. Before you register, go through this checklist to find out which category might suit you.

2. You will be eligible for exemption in accordance with the relevant rules.

3. You can qualify for direct entry to the CS Executive if you have passed the CMA Final.

4. You will be eligible for an exemption according to the present eligibility criteria.

5. You have finished your postgraduate studies: check that your qualification meets the relevant direct-entry rules.

6. Check to see if you are eligible under the new rules.

7 . You are in your last year of your graduation course: provisional registration may be granted if the conditions are met.

8. Having passed the 12th class without possessing a qualifying exemption, one usually takes the CSEET as one's entry route.

9. Keep in mind that this checklist is only a rapid reference and not a guarantee of admission; your ultimate eligibility will be determined by the current ICSI regulations and the documents you provide.

Documents to Check Before Registration

It's a good idea to have your educational certificates ready when you apply for the CS Executive Programme, since they might include the following, according to your category:

1. The Class 10 and Class 12 certificates, where applicable.

2. The marksheets and degree certificates from graduation or after graduation.

3. CS Foundation pass details.

4. CMA Final qualification documents.

5. Documents required for passing the CA Intermediate exam, where applicable.

6. Proof of admission to the final-year examinations or other evidence for provisional registration.

7. You must always adhere to the document requirements set out in the most recent ICSI registration instructions.

Why Should You Check Your Eligibility Early?

Checking your eligibility before you register will save you time and allow you to plan your studies more effectively; furthermore, if you are entitled to an exemption, you may be able to skip the CSEET and begin preparing for the CS Executive Programme.
Students who have to take the CSEET should focus on understanding the syllabus, plan their preparation, and regularly do some practice. Students who are eligible for direct entry should become familiar with the CS Executive syllabus and the registration deadlines.

Conclusion

CSEET acts as a major entrance point for many students undertaking the Company Secretary course, even though it is not a compulsory requirement for all eligible applicants. Students may be given exemption from it if they have passed the CS Foundation, the CMA Final, or have completed both their graduation and postgraduation programmes, as provided by the applicable rules.
The best course of action is to check your educational qualifications against the latest ICSI guidelines prior to registering; once you have established that you are eligible, you can then be sure to proceed with planning the next stage of your CS journey.
If you intend to enroll in the CS course, you should go to the official ICSI website to check the latest eligibility criteria and registration information before doing so.
